Important Diet Tips for Breastfeeding Moms

Important Diet Tips For Breastfeeding Moms
by Joy Lee Tan
The diet of a breastfeeding mother has to provide adequate nutrition for the baby and also herself. A nursing mother requires at least 500 additional calories, which should be derived from a nutritious intake of food. Here are some important diet tips for breastfeeding mothers.

Follow doctor’s recommendations
Most doctors prescribe a continuation of the nutritious pre-natal diet plan that is rich in calories, proteins, vitamins and minerals for the healthy development of the baby. One (1) gram of protein should be consumed for every pound of the mother’s weight. Calcium-rich foods such as milk, cheeses and yogurt should also be encouraged. You need to eat a wide variety of organic fruits and vegetables and whole grains for you and your baby’s optimum health. Singaporean research reveals that nursing women are usually lacking in folic acid and zinc. So, additional supplements of these can be taken on doctor’s recommendations.

Your diet should also include foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids because they contain DHA, which the baby needs for brain development. This is found in fish and fish supplements, various kinds of nuts and seeds.
A word of caution here: Don’t rush to buy those Vitamin A supplements just because everybody is recommending them. Although your daily need for Vitamin A increases from 1000 milligrams to 1300 milligrams, most of it can be sourced from naturally available raw vegetables, almonds, hazelnuts, dairy products, leafy green vegetables and meat products.

Stay hydrated
Dehydration can lead to decreased milk supply. If you notice carefully, mother’s milk appears watery and you feel thirstier while you are feeding. This is because a large part of breast milk is made up of water. You should aim to increase your consumption of water by adding an extra 2 quarts of water per day. Water can also be consumed in the form of fruits, milk, juices, vegetables, soups – all of which have good water content.

Eat more
While nursing, you are consuming nutritious food for two people. So, you have to increase your consumption of calories to get around 2500 calories a day but you can spread it out over 5 meals – breakfast, lunch, snack, dinner and another snack during the evening. Use the snack time to take in water, fruits and low fat dairy products. Remember that the quantity of milk you produce is directly dependent on the amount of food and beverages that you consume.

Foods to Avoid
There are certain foods that you should stay away from such as caffeine, alcohol and nicotine, which can irritate your baby and even seriously affect his/her development. All these ingredients pass through the mother’s milk to the baby. While smoking can induce vomiting, heart rate increase, restlessness and diarrhea in baby, alcohol can retard your baby’s growth if consumed in large quantities. Some doctors in Singapore suggest occasional sips of wine or beer – preferably after a feeding session or 2-3 hours before the baby is to be fed.
Many doctors also advise avoiding consumption of fish with high mercury levels as well as certain herbs and supplements.

Foods that can irritate your baby
There are many foods that can irritate babies such as chocolates, colas, spices, chili, garlic and gassy foods such as cabbage, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, and citrus fruits. However, there is no universal rule regarding this fact. Singapore is a multi-racial society and you find different cultures preferring or avoiding different kinds of foods. Babies too react differently to different foods. If you find your baby irritated or disturbed any day, you should try to recall what you have eaten in the past 24 hours. If you suspect any food to be the cause of your baby’s irritation, you can try eliminating it from the diet for a while. For this, you need to carefully observe and monitor your child.

By following these tips as mentioned above, you can easily make a plan of your own that will help keep your baby happy and healthy.

10 Secrets To Having A Happy Marriage

10 Secrets To Having A Happy Marriage
by Joy Lee Tan
It’s easy to fall in love, but it’s a lot harder to sustain love. Here are ten secrets to having a happier marriage. Trust me and try them out. They really do work!

1) Maintain a work life balance
If you are addicted to your job, then you will most likely lose everything that is of value to you just like a drug addict. Without balance you could lose your family, lose perspective at work, do a bad job and ultimately lose your job, your spouse, or both!
Take the necessary time to invest in the things that really matter in your life so that everything else will come into balance. We’re not saying to slack off at work and spend all your time with your family, but you do need to find a balance between the two. Coming home every night after your kids have gone to bed and leaving for the office as they wake up, spells doom.

2) Spouse before kids
Remember that popular rhyme we use to chant in primary school, “Jane and Joe sitting in a tree. K-I-S-S-I-N-G. First comes love, and then comes marriage. Then you get a baby in a carriage.” How apt! Contrary to popular belief, in order to raise secure and happy kids, you need to put your marriage first and your babies second! A strong and loving relationship will help kids be more grounded and secure, as they notice the bond and happiness between their parents.
Children will also learn virtues like patience, kindness, love, and forgiveness by seeing the way parents treat each other. By putting your kids first, you are raising a child who is the center of the family, who will believe his/her needs are more important than anyone else’s. Such kids could easily grow up to be demanding and self-centered.
3) Agree on core parenting principles to avoid conflicts
Most parenting disagreements are about raising children, especially in the context of how and when to discipline kids. In order to present a united front as you discipline your kids, it’s important to discuss your parenting plan in advance. This way your children will not be able to play one parent against another.

4) Fighting is fine. Hating is not!
There is nothing wrong with being mad with your spouse after a heated argument. There is even nothing wrong with strongly disliking them at that moment. However, there is something wrong with harboring those ill feelings to the point of harming your relationship. Following those times of disagreement, help yourself to calm down by reminding yourself of what you love about him/her or why you married your spouse in the first place, and you’ll be surprised at how easily those loving feelings return.

5) Have sex!
A sexless marriage may not necessarily end up in divorce, but it is a marriage with serious issues and might lead to affairs. There are many feelings that occur in a sexless marriage such as feelings of loneliness, lack of confidence and others. While challenging to overcome, it is not insurmountable.
Mums, men are visual creatures, so spend time on your appearance and find ways to seduce your husband. From experience, seducing your man in sexy lingerie as you whisper flattering and suggestive words will heat things up quickly! Dads, exhaustion and sex do not mix. Consider helping with the laundry, buying dinner, and follow it up with a foot rub.

6) Talk for ten minutes everyday
Do you remember when you used to just talk? Most couples don’t talk anymore — unless they have something to communicate, a decision to make, or a task to complete. The most important thing about talking to each other is not communicating; it’s connecting. So take a vow to talk to each other for at least ten minutes everyday.

7) Discuss your finances and spending habits
Statistics indicate that nearly half of all married couples argue over money issues. This speaks loudly of the major reason most couples fight. If one is a tight-wad and the other spends money like it’s going out of fashion, it can’t help but create problems in your marriage. Therefore, talk honestly about spending habits. It’s important to establish spending expectations, set goals and decide on a financial plan for your family.

8) You don’t need to be right all the time!
Drop the ego. You don’t always have to be right, or your partner wrong. Such behaviour will only impede the opportunity for your conversation to have a win-win result. In the long run, does it really matter who is right? Or is it more important to create an environment where the opinions and beliefs of both spouses are of value?

9) It’s all in the mind
If you expect to get along with your spouse then you will succeed in most instances. Talking respectfully and looking for creative solutions to the problems you face will go a long way in creating a strong and enduring marriage. If you expect to have a ugly showdown, then it will happen. If you expect to resolve a disagreement with mutual respect and love, you will do so as a well balanced couple.

10) Changing the world starts from you!
Perhaps the most important secret to a great marriage is the idea that you can never change your partner, no matter how hard you try. If you spend the same amount of energy simply improving yourself, rather than trying to change your partner, you’ll find that you’ll be happier and that your partner will start responding to you more positively.

Breastfeeding - Sakit???? Susah??? Takde susu??? Macam-macam alasan!

Breastfeeding...
I guess semua dah kena tukar mindset & I am happy to see many mothers nowadays choose breastfeeding their babies even sampai 2 years...Great transformation from the obsession of searching good & high quality formula milks...
Pam pun berdarah! Alasan ini, selalu ditemui semasa saya sedang pumping... (Please buy a good & quality pump)
2) Susah...malu...(gosh! tak boleh terima langsung alasan ini)
3) Takde susu (ni memang banyak la bagi alasan...kalo tak bagi, macamana nak ada susu)
Well, ku bukan la terer sangat bab breastfeeding ni, baru menyusu for 1 year 3 months & still going...hoping that I can complete my nursing experience for 2 years... I adore all BF mothers...You are my inspiration & courage...
I've through it & it was hard! I must admit, masa memula memang susah... That's why you need to have the breastfeeding knowledge sejak masa mengandung lagi!
Anda kena belajar untuk breastfeeding dengan jaya nya! Baru ia jadi senang...
Commitment+Knowledge+Support = Success!
Masa pregnant is the best time to grab all knowledge on BF...Macam-macam source ada. Internet! BF mothers lain pun banyak yang nak membantu...Friends...
This is important supaya lepas deliver, you will not panic...
A good friendly hospital is a BONUS... =) Lucky me deliver kat Pantai Medical Center Bangsar yang memang pro-BF...I learnt a lot there!

Don't ever give up!
Ramai ibu-ibu yang cepat give up...Ni la masalahnyer...Husband - supposed to be penyokong kuat BF! Thanx to my hubby yang tak penah jemu membantu & memberi sokongan untuk BF... Baby baru lahir memang la asyik nak BF je, so layan kan je...That's why you are give 60 days maternity leave... Your parents or PIL, memang akan cakap your baby tak kenyang la apa la...Abaikan saje hasutan tu... Believe me, worth it! One day, your parents will be very proud to have a fully & exclusively BF grandchildren...
Mahal ler Breastpump!
No! Ni lagi satu hal...Formula milk tu tak mahal ke? Apa la salahnyer you spend for breastpump kan... Ikut your budget... For expecting mothers, please make sure breastpump is in your must-buy list! I started with Avent Manual Breastpump (mahal ker?) and used it for 1 year... The pump cost only RM 200++ ...So cost is not an issue okay...
You & Your Baby
Me, personally, went through a hard time...masa lepas deliver my baby had jaundice...he can't even latch correctly! He had his mother's milk via cup! Hmm....Nursing strike, I experienced it 4 times before...Memang ada je masalah...You & your baby really have to be strong and keep on going no matter what! Nothing is impossible... =)

BF sangat mudah!
Last but not least, BF sangat memudahkan kaum ibu...Tanyala mana-mana BF mothers...memang senang...especially during night time...Tak payah berjaga malam & my hubby is very lucky daddy, sebab tidur nye tidak terganggu langsung di malam hari... Kalo menyusu, I can take a nap together...Jalan-jalan, I don't need to bring bottle together....Senang kan???
Choose Breastfeeding!

A newborn baby has only three demands. They are warmth in the arms of its mother, food from her breasts, and security in the knowledge of her presence. Breastfeeding satisfies all three. ~Grantly Dick-Read
Nursing does not diminish the beauty of a woman's breasts; it enhances their charm by making them look lived in and happy. ~Robert A. Heinlein
There are three reasons for breast-feeding: the milk is always at the right temperature; it comes in attractive containers; and the cat can't get it. ~Irena Chalmers
It is only in the act of nursing that a woman realizes her motherhood in visible and tangible fashion; it is a joy of every moment. ~Honore de Balzac
People need to understand that when they're deciding between breastmilk and formula, they're not deciding between Coke and Pepsi.... They're choosing between a live, pure substance and a dead substance made with the cheapest oils available. ~Chele Marmet
Last but not least,
Boobs are for breastfeeding. ~Author Unknown

Irqin & Rotavirus

Hi Mommies & Friendz,

Today, we went to clinic again to check my lil Irqin...he's having diarhea since yesterday...Me suspected, it is Rotavirus infection, since my manager juz cerita pasal anaknyer kena Rotavirus & her paed cakap the virus tengah MUSIM... Teringat dengan her story, then I remembered my niece lately kena diarhea & muntah2...

Then, after jumpa doc, he confirmed that it is ROTAVIRUS...but luckily, Irqin got mild Rotavirus...sebab dia masih mau makan & active! Vaccine dah ada tapi recommended amek before 2 months...Tapi bile dah kena rotavirus, ur baby akan imun...Just make sure they are no dehydrated!

So, here's some info about Rotavirus....Make sure anak anda selalu basuh tangan sebab this virus senang merebak!

Rotavirus

About Rotavirus
Almost all kids have had a rotavirus infection by the time they're 5 years old. Rotavirus is one of the most common causes of diarrhea, and severe infection (rotavirus gastroenteritis) is the leading cause of severe, dehydrating diarrhea in infants and young children.
Rotavirus infections are responsible for approximately 3 million cases of diarrhea and 55,000 hospitalizations for diarrhea and dehydration in children under 5 years old each year in the United States.

Although these infections cause relatively few U.S. deaths, diarrhea caused by rotavirus causes more than half a million deaths worldwide every year. This is especially true in developing countries, where nutrition and health care are not optimal.

Signs and Symptoms
Kids with a rotavirus infection have fever, nausea, and vomiting, often followed by abdominal cramps and frequent, watery diarrhea. Kids may also have a cough and runny nose. As with all viruses, though, some rotavirus infections cause few or no symptoms, especially in adults.
Sometimes the diarrhea that accompanies a rotavirus infection is so severe that it can quickly lead to dehydration. Signs of dehydration include: thirst, irritability, restlessness, lethargy, sunken eyes, a dry mouth and tongue, dry skin, fewer trips to the bathroom to urinate, and (in infants) a dry diaper for several hours.

Contagiousness
In the United States, rotavirus infection outbreaks are common during the winter and spring months. It is particularly a problem in childcare centers and children's hospitals because rotavirus infection is very contagious.
The virus passes in the stool of infected people before and after they have symptoms of the illness. Kids can become infected if they put their fingers in their mouths after touching something that has been contaminated. Usually this happens when kids don't wash their hands often enough, especially before eating and after using the toilet.
People who care for children, including health care and childcare workers, also can spread the virus, especially if they don't wash their hands after changing diapers.

Prevention
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) now recommends a rotavirus vaccine be included in the lineup of routine immunizations given to all infants.
The RotaTeq vaccine has been found to prevent approximately 75% of cases of rotavirus infection and 98% of severe cases. Another vaccine, Rotarix, also is available and is effective in preventing rotavirus infection. Your doctor will have the most current information about these vaccines.
A previous rotavirus vaccine was taken off the market in 1999 because it was linked to an increased risk for intussusception, a type of bowel obstruction, in young infants. Neither RotaTeq nor Rotarix have been found to have this increased risk.
Frequent hand washing is the best tool to limit the spread of rotavirus infection. Kids who are infected should stay home from childcare groups until their diarrhea has ended. In hospitals, rotavirus outbreaks are controlled by isolating infected patients and following strict hand-washing procedures.

Professional Treatment
An infant or toddler who becomes moderately or severely dehydrated may need to be treated in a hospital with intravenous (IV) fluids to bring the body's fluid and salt levels back to normal. Most older kids can be treated at home.
Your doctor may need to test your child's blood, urine, or stool to confirm that the diarrhea is being caused by rotavirus and not by bacteria. Because antibiotics do not work against illnesses caused by viruses, the doctor will not prescribe antibiotics to treat a rotavirus infection.

Home Treatment
To prevent dehydration, follow your doctor's guidance about what your child should eat and drink. Your doctor may suggest that you give your child special drinks that replace body fluids, especially if the diarrhea has been going on for longer than 2 or 3 days.
In general, kids with mild diarrhea who are not dehydrated should continue to eat normally but should receive more fluids. (Fruit juices and soft drinks can make diarrhea worse and should be avoided.) Those who have mild to moderate dehydration should be given an oral rehydration solution in small, frequent amounts to correct the dehydration and then should go back to eating normally. Children who are breastfed should be breastfed throughout.
A child who is vomiting will need to eat smaller amounts more frequently. Follow your doctor's guidance and avoid giving your child store-bought medicines for vomiting or diarrhea unless your doctor recommends them.

When to Call the Doctor
Call the doctor for advice if your child has signs of a rotavirus infection, including watery diarrhea, fever, nausea, and vomiting. Call immediately if your child is showing signs of dehydration.
