Preparation To Be Fully Committed Breastfeeding Mother

It's been a while...
Tak cakap pasal breastfeeding!
Walaupun sekarang dah stop breastfeeding (BF) Irqin, but I am still pro-BF and always encourage my friends to commit to BF!
Dah ramai jugak kawan-kawan saya yang berjaya fully BF and I am so happy to be apart of them!
Yes! You can do it!
Saya bukan pakar, tapi I want to help and support my friends!

Last few days, ada citer2 dgn my friends on BF...dia baru pregnant.
My friends mostly kalo pregnant je, saya akan encourage diorang breastfeed.
=)

So, here is some tips for new mothers on how to be a successful BF mom!
Hope these may help!

1) Learn breastfeeding during pregnancy!

From the day you knew you are pregnant, that is the starting day of learning breastfeeding.
From my observation, mostly ramai ibu-ibu yang tidak ambil kisah pun.
Breastfeeding is not easy, seriously!
You have to learn!
Many websites yang boleh direfer and support group to join.
As for me, I learnt from a friend of mine & from websites!
More from other BF moms yang saya tak kenal pun...Just via online...
Mothers have to very well-prepared!
Bukannya dah bersalin baru nak belajar.
It will be hard kalo mothers tu tak kuat.

2) Get support from husband and other BF moms!

Most importantly, husband perlu memahami & menyokong!
Other than that, you can always refer and get support from pro-BF mom.
Your mother or in law pun takkan support BF.
And kalo tak kuat dengan those hasutan, memang failed.
So, whenever you feel down & confused, always get support from others!
Macam saya dulu, I was kinda awal jugak antara kawan2 yang kawen/pregnant,
So I just refer to susuibu.com ~ especially via forum.
Memang ramai yang bagi semangat and membantu.
You yourself pun kena kuat and have a mindset.

3) Prepare the Breastfeeding Gadget!
Breastfeeding gadgets are very important!
All those breastpumps, storages, nursing bras, nursing pads, and etc!
Listkan all barang & beli before bersalin. So you will be very committed to do it.
Jangan la ada dalam list Formula Milk pulak!
Macam saya dulu, I have set my mindset, dalam dunia ni takde susu lain dah...only breastmilk!
No other option. FULLSTOP!

Well, I guess that my 3 main points!
Yang paling penting la...
So friends, harap2 ini dapat membantu.

BYE.

Irqin is 26 months old today!!!

Hello everybody!
Irqin is 26 months today!!!
So glad he is getting bigger & wiser!
=)
A bit updates on Irqin - he is officially stop breastfeeding...
Yup, my aim memang 2 years sahaja... Tak nak extend...
Sebab takut melarat -larat...
Memula, dia masih nak BF, I was like saying to him " Irqin, Irqin dah big boy...Tak nak la SUSU SUSU lagi..." lepas-lepas tu, dia dah tak nak dah...
That's it! Sangat senang...
Memula risau gak, dia mintak-mintak...
Risau macamana nak wean, nak kena letak macam2 konon nya kat breast...
Masa dia baru masuk 2 years tu, for the 1st month tu, masih bagi kalo dia mintak...
Tapi kalo tak mintak, saya memang tak bagi...
Plus, I kept saying that he is big boy now & BF is for babies...
Haha...
And it works!
Nak kata sedih stop BF tak jugak...lebih kepada relief...
Kepuasan pun ada...
=D
Sekarang ni tengah dok survey daycare and playschool for him nak enrol next year..
Hmm, any suggestion area Bangsar/Jalan Klang Lama/Pantai?
Hmm...hopefully dapat cepat...
Ok la...Daaaa daaa...

Breastfeeding: Gisele Bundchen wants breastfeeding law

Supermodel Gisele Bundchen has called for a worldwide law forcing new mothers to breastfeed for at least six months.

Supermodel Gisele Bundchen has called for a worldwide law forcing new mothers to breastfeed for at least six months.
Gisele Bundchen thinks a law should be made to make new mothers breastfeed for at least six months.
The 30-year-old supermodel - who gave birth to son Benjamin, her first child with husband Tom Brady, in December 2009 - thinks it is wrong for mothers to give formula to their newborns.
She said in an interview with Harper's Bazaar magazine: 'Some people think they don't have to breastfeed and I think, 'Are you going to give chemical food to your child when they are so little?' I think there should be a worldwide law that mothers should breast-feed their babies for six months.'
The Brazilian-born beauty also admitted that 'breastfeeding really helped me keep my figure'.
Gisele also revealed she prepared 'mentally and physically' by doing yoga before her home birth.
She said: 'It prepared me mentally and physically. It's called 'labour', not 'holiday' for a reason and I knew that. You want to go into the most intense physical experience of your life unprepared? That doesn't make sense to me. I wasn't expecting someone else to get the baby out of me.'
Gisele - who delivered Benjamin in the bathtub at her and Tom's Beacon Hill penthouse, in Boston - doesn't think she is special for opting for a home birth, she just thought it was normal.
She said: 'Not for one second did it cross my mind that I was not going to have my baby at home. I'm not the first person to give birth naturally. Billions of other women have come before me and have done this - so why can't I do it

At last... Mothers Room!!!

At last...announcement on renovation of mothers room!
After almost 1 year 7 months breastfeeding Irqin, baru la my office buat renovation for nursing mothers...Syukur... =)
I worked at KLCC...dulu Level 50 Tower 1, sekarang Level 69 Tower 2...
Susah sgt2 nak pump tau... bilik surau masa Level 50 memang takde...
So, I need to go down Level 3, main surau to pump everyday...
Nak turun Level 3 tu, bukan senang...I need to take 3 different lift ok! and 3 times a day, bayangkan!
Yang lagi hectic, I used to use Spectra 3, electric point memang takde! Ada pun 3 pin point untuk vacuum yang bulat tu je... So everyday, I kena guna my beloved & banyak berjasa Avent Manual Pump! I spend minimum 30 minutes every session...hmm...
After a year, baru I upgrade guna Freestyle & it helps a lot...sebab double pumping kan...spend time dalam 10-15 minutes je...and lepas pindah Level 69, ada surau sendiri...so boleh la pump kat surau ni...hmm... New mothers, recommended pake Freestyle! Even mahal, boleh je join kutu kan??? I joined kutu semata-mata nak pakai Freestyle...huhuh...
So, better bila ada mothers room ni...moga lebih ramai ibu pilih untuk breastfeed their babies!
Kat my workplace pun dah ada BREASTFEEDING SUPPORT CLUB! Bravo!!!
Semoga makin banyak companies & organizations yang akan provide this kind of facilities! Lagi best kalo ada nursery kan...hmmm...Dapat jumpa time lunch... =)
Happy Breastfeeding Mommies!!!

Important Diet Tips for Breastfeeding Moms

Important Diet Tips For Breastfeeding Moms
by Joy Lee Tan
The diet of a breastfeeding mother has to provide adequate nutrition for the baby and also herself. A nursing mother requires at least 500 additional calories, which should be derived from a nutritious intake of food. Here are some important diet tips for breastfeeding mothers.

Follow doctor’s recommendations
Most doctors prescribe a continuation of the nutritious pre-natal diet plan that is rich in calories, proteins, vitamins and minerals for the healthy development of the baby. One (1) gram of protein should be consumed for every pound of the mother’s weight. Calcium-rich foods such as milk, cheeses and yogurt should also be encouraged. You need to eat a wide variety of organic fruits and vegetables and whole grains for you and your baby’s optimum health. Singaporean research reveals that nursing women are usually lacking in folic acid and zinc. So, additional supplements of these can be taken on doctor’s recommendations.

Your diet should also include foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids because they contain DHA, which the baby needs for brain development. This is found in fish and fish supplements, various kinds of nuts and seeds.
A word of caution here: Don’t rush to buy those Vitamin A supplements just because everybody is recommending them. Although your daily need for Vitamin A increases from 1000 milligrams to 1300 milligrams, most of it can be sourced from naturally available raw vegetables, almonds, hazelnuts, dairy products, leafy green vegetables and meat products.

Stay hydrated
Dehydration can lead to decreased milk supply. If you notice carefully, mother’s milk appears watery and you feel thirstier while you are feeding. This is because a large part of breast milk is made up of water. You should aim to increase your consumption of water by adding an extra 2 quarts of water per day. Water can also be consumed in the form of fruits, milk, juices, vegetables, soups – all of which have good water content.

Eat more
While nursing, you are consuming nutritious food for two people. So, you have to increase your consumption of calories to get around 2500 calories a day but you can spread it out over 5 meals – breakfast, lunch, snack, dinner and another snack during the evening. Use the snack time to take in water, fruits and low fat dairy products. Remember that the quantity of milk you produce is directly dependent on the amount of food and beverages that you consume.

Foods to Avoid
There are certain foods that you should stay away from such as caffeine, alcohol and nicotine, which can irritate your baby and even seriously affect his/her development. All these ingredients pass through the mother’s milk to the baby. While smoking can induce vomiting, heart rate increase, restlessness and diarrhea in baby, alcohol can retard your baby’s growth if consumed in large quantities. Some doctors in Singapore suggest occasional sips of wine or beer – preferably after a feeding session or 2-3 hours before the baby is to be fed.
Many doctors also advise avoiding consumption of fish with high mercury levels as well as certain herbs and supplements.

Foods that can irritate your baby
There are many foods that can irritate babies such as chocolates, colas, spices, chili, garlic and gassy foods such as cabbage, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, and citrus fruits. However, there is no universal rule regarding this fact. Singapore is a multi-racial society and you find different cultures preferring or avoiding different kinds of foods. Babies too react differently to different foods. If you find your baby irritated or disturbed any day, you should try to recall what you have eaten in the past 24 hours. If you suspect any food to be the cause of your baby’s irritation, you can try eliminating it from the diet for a while. For this, you need to carefully observe and monitor your child.

By following these tips as mentioned above, you can easily make a plan of your own that will help keep your baby happy and healthy.

Breastfeeding - Sakit???? Susah??? Takde susu??? Macam-macam alasan!

Breastfeeding...
I guess semua dah kena tukar mindset & I am happy to see many mothers nowadays choose breastfeeding their babies even sampai 2 years...Great transformation from the obsession of searching good & high quality formula milks...
Pam pun berdarah! Alasan ini, selalu ditemui semasa saya sedang pumping... (Please buy a good & quality pump)
2) Susah...malu...(gosh! tak boleh terima langsung alasan ini)
3) Takde susu (ni memang banyak la bagi alasan...kalo tak bagi, macamana nak ada susu)
Well, ku bukan la terer sangat bab breastfeeding ni, baru menyusu for 1 year 3 months & still going...hoping that I can complete my nursing experience for 2 years... I adore all BF mothers...You are my inspiration & courage...
I've through it & it was hard! I must admit, masa memula memang susah... That's why you need to have the breastfeeding knowledge sejak masa mengandung lagi!
Anda kena belajar untuk breastfeeding dengan jaya nya! Baru ia jadi senang...
Commitment+Knowledge+Support = Success!
Masa pregnant is the best time to grab all knowledge on BF...Macam-macam source ada. Internet! BF mothers lain pun banyak yang nak membantu...Friends...
This is important supaya lepas deliver, you will not panic...
A good friendly hospital is a BONUS... =) Lucky me deliver kat Pantai Medical Center Bangsar yang memang pro-BF...I learnt a lot there!

Don't ever give up!
Ramai ibu-ibu yang cepat give up...Ni la masalahnyer...Husband - supposed to be penyokong kuat BF! Thanx to my hubby yang tak penah jemu membantu & memberi sokongan untuk BF... Baby baru lahir memang la asyik nak BF je, so layan kan je...That's why you are give 60 days maternity leave... Your parents or PIL, memang akan cakap your baby tak kenyang la apa la...Abaikan saje hasutan tu... Believe me, worth it! One day, your parents will be very proud to have a fully & exclusively BF grandchildren...
Mahal ler Breastpump!
No! Ni lagi satu hal...Formula milk tu tak mahal ke? Apa la salahnyer you spend for breastpump kan... Ikut your budget... For expecting mothers, please make sure breastpump is in your must-buy list! I started with Avent Manual Breastpump (mahal ker?) and used it for 1 year... The pump cost only RM 200++ ...So cost is not an issue okay...
You & Your Baby
Me, personally, went through a hard time...masa lepas deliver my baby had jaundice...he can't even latch correctly! He had his mother's milk via cup! Hmm....Nursing strike, I experienced it 4 times before...Memang ada je masalah...You & your baby really have to be strong and keep on going no matter what! Nothing is impossible... =)

BF sangat mudah!
Last but not least, BF sangat memudahkan kaum ibu...Tanyala mana-mana BF mothers...memang senang...especially during night time...Tak payah berjaga malam & my hubby is very lucky daddy, sebab tidur nye tidak terganggu langsung di malam hari... Kalo menyusu, I can take a nap together...Jalan-jalan, I don't need to bring bottle together....Senang kan???
Choose Breastfeeding!

A newborn baby has only three demands. They are warmth in the arms of its mother, food from her breasts, and security in the knowledge of her presence. Breastfeeding satisfies all three. ~Grantly Dick-Read
Nursing does not diminish the beauty of a woman's breasts; it enhances their charm by making them look lived in and happy. ~Robert A. Heinlein
There are three reasons for breast-feeding: the milk is always at the right temperature; it comes in attractive containers; and the cat can't get it. ~Irena Chalmers
It is only in the act of nursing that a woman realizes her motherhood in visible and tangible fashion; it is a joy of every moment. ~Honore de Balzac
People need to understand that when they're deciding between breastmilk and formula, they're not deciding between Coke and Pepsi.... They're choosing between a live, pure substance and a dead substance made with the cheapest oils available. ~Chele Marmet
Last but not least,
Boobs are for breastfeeding. ~Author Unknown

It's The World Breastfeeding Week 1-7 August 2009

Hey everyone! It's the World Breastfeeding Week from 1st August until 7th August 2009...
Me support BF!!! Hope you guys too!!! This year theme - BREASTFEEDING - A Vital Emergency Response..Are you ready??? Hmm...ready kah anda??? Bayangkan hidup ni tetiba ada masalah, bencana alam ke apa ke???Mana nak cekau Formula Milk yang dibanggakan sesetengah pihak???? hmmm...susu ibu jugak yang ada anytime,anywhere...betol tak??? And breastmilk is the best, takde susu boleh tandingi susu ibu tau...so ibu-ibu and bakal ibu-ibu, pilihla untuk menyusui anak anda secara exclusive selama 6 bulan dan continue la selama 2 tahun...tak rugi pun...untung lagi ada la...hehehe...
Kat Malaysia, ada jugak event for WBW ni...susuibu.com akan adakan Hari Susu Ibu 2009...
Sila la BF mothers, sila la join...hehe...
Anyway, here's some article from http://www.worldbreastfeedingweek.org/
Breastfeeding: A Vital Emergency ResponseAre you ready?

OBJECTIVES OF WORLD BREASTFEEDING WEEK 2009

1) To draw attention to the vital role that breastfeeding plays in emergencies worldwide.
2) To stress the need for active protection and support of breastfeeding before and during emergencies.
3) To inform mothers, breastfeeding advocates, communities, health professionals, governments, aid agencies, donors, and the media on how they can actively support breastfeeding before and during an emergency.
4) To mobilise action and nurture networking and collaboration between those with breastfeeding skills and those involved in emergency response.
RATIONALE
Children are the most vulnerable in emergencies – child mortality can soar from 2 to 70 times higher than average due to diarrhoea, respiratory illness and malnutrition.
Breastfeeding is a life saving intervention and protection is greatest for the youngest infants. Even in non-emergency settings, non-breastfed babies under 2 months of age are six times more likely to die.
Emergencies can happen anywhere in the world. Emergencies destroy what is ‘normal,’ leaving caregivers struggling to cope and infants vulnerable to disease and death.
During emergencies, mothers need active support to continue or re-establish breastfeeding.
Emergency preparedness is vital. Supporting breastfeeding in non-emergency settings will strengthen mothers’ capacity to cope in an emergency

I am struggling!!!

Yup... I am struggling! Struggle to keep continue breastfeed my baby...Sejak 2-3 bulan ni, my production was not in a good condition... Sekarang dah fully BF almost 11 months, every time pump, hmm...not as mewah as before...kalo dulu sekali pam boleh dapat 8oz-10oz..sekarang hmm..paling byk 6oz...susah memang susah tapi semangat kena kuat...Dulu pam masa keja twice a day...tengahari sekali, petang sekali....sekarang 3 kali...pagi,tengahari & petang...Imagine macamana struggle nyer nak keep continue breastfeeding...

Irqin minum pun tak banyak...memang kena catu ler susu nyer... slalunya 3-4oz per session...kalo baby yang minum formula ni rasanya tak cukup dah byk ni...Alhamdullilah, my baby cukup je walaupun diberi 3oz sahaja... See how great is the breastmilk! sentiasa mencukupi!!! Kalo during malam & weekends, memang ku beri direct feeding...so tak tau la bape oz la dia dapat...Tapi pasti cukup!!! Positif positif positif !!!

I really adore mommies yang menyusukan anaknya fully for 2 years...that's my aim...tapi tu semua kuasa Allah...InsyaAllah, I can do it...To keep continue my mission ni, I took extra thingy macam :
1) Anmum Lacta

2) GNC Fenugreek

3)Pil ASI (Air Susu Ibu)

4) Air Longan - aku asyik batuk so kena la stop...huhuh...air bali , biskut IKO, soya melilia, dan macam - macam lagi laaaaaaa....kurma la, kismis la...semua ku telan....

Plus, aku join kutu Medela Freestyle yang dianjurkan Aishah MylilAida & akan dapat this July --Irqin will be one year, meaning fully BF for 1 year la...InsyaAllah....Moga2 dengan adanya Freestyle nanti, semangatku makin kuat & aku akan terus dapat usaha BF Irqin! Tapi jasa baik my Avent Manual & Spectra 3 ku tak mungkin aku lupakan...hehhe....They help me a lot!!!! Both work very well....

Semoga aku dapat teruskan usaha ku ini...Doa - doa kan yer... heheh.... Sekian sessi luahan perasaan untuk hari ini...hahha...

The story of breastfeeding, me & Irqin...

Picture of Nani & Me and the F1 drivers, Robert Kubica & Nick Heidfield

This is the story...How did I start to commit with breastfeeding??? hmm...kalo ingat kan balik, during pregnancy period, i did google a lot...surfing the net about the babies, the pregnancy, the labor, everything yang relates to the baby...then, i found about breastfeeding...masa tuh, takde la semangat sangat, cuma memang nak breastfeed tapi tak terfikir la sampai 2 years.

Then fortunately, I went to PIPE programme...Induction for PETRONAS New Executives. I met my roommate, Nani...Masa tu I was pregnant 5 months. Nani breastfed her baby boy,Daniel. So every lunch time, dia akan pam. Petang abes kelas, dia pam. Dia la banyak ajar pasal breastfeeding. To Nani, thanx a lot for encouraging me...hehehe....

So, lepas PIPE programme, my awareness of breastfeeding memang dah tinggi. Daku mula surf the net read about breastfeeding. I joined the susuibu.com forum. Kat sini memang banyak info pasal breastfeeding. Apa je soalan, pasti ada jawapan kat sini... So, bile dah tau banyak, memang dah fully committed la...tak nak amek formula milk... =)

I chose to deliver at Pantai Medical Center, Bangsar -> Baby Friendly Hospital... And for me, this hospital did satisfied me... Service memang tip top... and this hospital memang betul-betul support breastfeeding. Masa kat sana, daku bawak botol susu (just in case), tapi nurse kat situ tegur...kat sini tak boleh ada botol...hmmm...see how committed the hospital to breastfeeding...and everytime baby nangis, dia akan straight bawak baby kepada the mother to breastfeed. Bukan senang je sumbat formula milk like other hospital. PMC jugak everyday dekat 3 kali dia datang check on the progress of our breastfeeding session. Dia akan check kita breastfeed ke tak, last breastfeed bile...and how we breastfeed the baby... I did face problem memula...my baby tak dapat nak latch...lucky me, the lactation counselors there were very helpful. Diorang akan tolong sampai the baby dapat & many positions diorang ajar...I was surprised with all those positions, which helped a lot! Bukan senang nak breastfeed memula, memang kena betul2 la ajar our baby. Don't give up sebab baby memula memang dia susah nak latch...Memang rasa nasib la deliver kat PMC, kalo hospital lain, maybe tak betul jaga our breastfeeding session macam PMC jaga...(ni pun after survey from my friend yg deliver other hospital).

Last but not least, my hubby is the best supporter...Dia banyak bagi semangat setiap kali i faced problems. Tak penah pun sekali bila faced problem, dia suh bagi formula jer...(like other people, kalo ada prob je--solution FM!). Walaupun masa memula my parents pun push me to give FM, daku pekakkan telinga jer...U really have to have the courage & buat bodoh je apa orang kata!Hehe...

Hmm, I guess I am really lucky because:

1) knowing Nani,

2) met the susuibu.com,

3) delivered at Pantai Medical Center,

4) and have a very supportive husband!!!

Now, what can I do is to encourage other people especially my friend to breastfeed too!!! Hopefully, daku dapat fully breasfeed my baby for 2 years <--my ultimate aim...hehe Bak kata my friend Lydia, "Susu lembu untuk lembu, susu ibu untuk anak ibu" --kan lydia kan...heheh... Bak kata Intan dalam sinetron 'Intan' "SEMANGAT!!!'
